Stupendously Silly in Any Language
I really cannot account for the why.
I hardly will take blame for the lack of judgment.
I feel compelled to clarify that I understand it to be frivolity of the highest order.
But I must confess plainly that I get a huge kick out of Spongebob speaking Dutch.
And the theme song? To die for. Or at least to fall over laughing about. Especially that part about him looking like a cheese souffle. That gets me everytime.
This post is for my nephew Mitch. And for any of you other silly underwater cartoon fanatics out there. Go on, you can admit it here, you're among friends. (Please forgive mistakes in translation.)
The theme song from Spongebob Squarepants:
Can we, kids?
Ai ai, kapitein! (eye eye cop-ee-tine)
Aye! Aye! Captain!
Ik hoor het niet! (ick hoar het neet)
I don't hear that!
Ai ai, kapitein! (eye eye capp-ee-tine)
Aye! Aye! Captain!
Oooooooow! (oooooooooh)
Oh!
Hij woont in een ananas diep in de zee (Hi vont in ayn ah-nah-nahs deep in dah zay)
He lives in a pineapple deep in the sea
Spongebob Squarepants (no translation necessary, yes?)
Hij ziet zo geel als een kaassouflée (Hi zeet zo khayl alls ayn kahs sooflay)
He looks so yellow as a cheese souffle
Spongebob Squarepants
Ja, iedereen weet wat voor mafkees het is (yah, eet-er-ayn vayt vaht for mahf-kays het is)
Yes, everyone knows what a weirdo he is
Spongebob Squarepants
Die vierkante friet is zo gek als een vis (dee fear-kahn-tah freet is zo kheck alls ayn fiss)
This square fry is crazy as a fish
Spongebob Squarepants
Spongebob Squarepants
Spongebob Squarepants
Spongebob Squarepants
Spongie-bob Square-pants
And just to prove I am not exaggerating the silliness point. The theme song lyrics now in English:
Are ya ready kids?
Aye Aye Captain!
I CAN'T HEAR YOU!
AYE AYE CAPTAIN!
ohhhhhh!!!!
Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!
Absorbant and yellow and poreous is he
SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!
If nautical nonsense be somethin' you wish
SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!
Then drop on the deck and flop like a fish!
SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!
Ready?
SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!
SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!
SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!
SPONGEYBOB SQUAREPAAAANTS
For your multi-sensory pleasure, the theme song:
And to make this post tolerable for my daughter, I give you the theme song once again, ala Avril Lavigne:
Now, that's something that ought to stick with you all day. Happy Humming!
Hehe. For some reason watching shows that you know the words to in English in another language always seems silly.
ReplyDeleteThey have Spongebob here too. It's ridiculous.
I used to get a hugest kick out of The Simpsons in Italian.
ReplyDeleteThe Flintstones theme song is my all time favorite Italian song!
ReplyDeleteHmmmm... my kids watch spongebob..I've never enjoyed it much, but I can see that it might be fun in Dutch!
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness that is sooooooo funny!! very very cute indeed!
ReplyDeleteUmmm...what does it mean if I already knew the words and the tune in English? Oh, and have you seen the movie? The Hof is great in it.
ReplyDeleteOMG, I laughed like crazy! I love Spongebob and I am not afraid to admit it! That is too funny. I have heard the theme in Vietnamese and it is hysterical there, too! thanks for a REALLY funny post! ::hugs::
ReplyDeleteI tell you most truly. I love Spongebob and I'm fully convinced that the writers cannot be straight/sober who write that stuff!
ReplyDeleteI fell in love withe Spongebob and Patrick, when my daughter and niece would enact scenes for me. This was before I ever saw the show! They were hilarious! (Their ages at the time ~ seventeen and eighteen!)
Now any one of us can be heard saying randomly, "Touch!" or "When in doubt, pinkie out!" If you know what those two things mean, then you can be in our club!
Great post, babe!
xoxoxox
ROFLOL! Avril's version just cracked me up. Waaay too funny.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
~Toni~
(whose kids adore the porous block).
My kids came RUNNING to see what i was watching just now. Blake (my four year old) wanted to know "why does spongebob sound so funny, Mommy?" hahaha. They had me watch each clip over and over again.
ReplyDeleteOh, any my kids don't watch spongebob very often. But my HUSBAND loves it. I mean, he TIVO's it! Some men are just little boys in big bodies. hahaha.
jenn-
ReplyDeleteI would probably be unable to stop giggling if I saw Spongebob speaking Mandarin.
cg-
Just as long as Homer still says "Doh!", I'd be okay with that.
jennifer-
Oh, man, the FLINSTONES? I haven't seen that in years! How do they translate "yaba daba doo!"?
rebecca-
Yeah, in Dutch he's pretty silly!
shelby-
It takes very little to get me giggling!
jami-
I think it means you are CERTIFIABLE. Or maybe just a big kid at heart, I can't remember.
kiki-
Spongebob is universal I guess. Who knew he would be ambassador to the world!
cat-
hahahahaha! I had a feeling you would be one of the fans to reveal herself. hehe!
toni-
I know! Me too.
brill-
Hee-hee! We are so accustomed to Mr. Squarepants speaking nederlands, that the other day when my oldest pulled it up on tv links and watched it in english, we all had to gather at the novelty! hahaha!
And your husband Tivo's the sponge? Now that IS a big kid!
Spongebob is impossible to live without. My mother reads to first graders once a week, and no matter what books she picks up, they want nothing but SPONGEBOB!
ReplyDeleteI have, never, ever watched that show - along with the Sopranos and Sex in the City. But maybe I could in Dutch!
ReplyDeletect-
ReplyDeletehahaha! That's great. My nephew is a nut for the undersea sponge too. Has been for most of his life...
SMID-
You not swayed by popular opinion when you choose your television shows then?
I LOVE SpongeBob Squarepants. He sounds much more manly in Dutch.
ReplyDeleteMy 3 yr old is cracking up. HAHAHAH
ReplyDeleteMy kids never got into Spongebob much, but I found myself running that Dutch clip a few times to see if I could catch it all. It's been a LOOOOOOOONG time since I heard Dutch spoken.
ReplyDeleteSigh. I'm so lame.
This is hilarious. I love watching American shows in other languages. Once, my kids changed the language their Disney DVD and watched the whole thing in French!
ReplyDeletePS The guy who bought our first house here in the US was Dutch.
My kids grew up with Teddy Ruxpin, they loved the songs and my oldest knew the words by heart...Somehow Spongebob doesn't do that for me..:o)
ReplyDeleteMy hubby loved this. It's sillier (is that a word?) when you don't understand it.
