All That Glitters Isn't Gold

Atomium Brussels, Belgium 4/07

SHINY

  1. I flew into Brussels in 1993 with kids in tow for a 17 day whirlwind European vacation. Our last day was spent touring Brussels before flying back to the States. I tho't we saw it all afoot - even located Mannekin Pis - but we missed this! My kids (me, too!) would have enjoyed it from the looks of it. Tell me more...

  2. Very nice! To think it was built during 1958, it looks very modern. Yeah, I looked it up. ;)

My photos are up. Have a great weekend!

  6. @minomma:
it would not have looked so shiny at all in 1993. They just finished some urgently needed restauration of the Atomium last fall. In the couple of years before it actually had deteriorated so much that parts could drop on your head when marching underneith (which you couldn't anymore!!). Mind you, it was build in 1958 as a temporary building that only should last as long as the world exposition. But it go so popular that they left it.
So now it underwent a big renovation that involved really taking it all apart and re-attaching new plates to the bolls. Now it should last for a while.
The engineer that had designed it and had coordinated first built and then was coordinating renovation as well, died just before it got finished!

It represents a chemic atom, hence "atomium" and represented the scientific optimism in the fifties. Often was said as well that the 9 bolls represented the 9 provinces of Belgium...but in the mean time we have 10 provinces.

  10. I acutally thought of this for today's photohunt too. I remember seeing it in the distance when I was in Brussels years ago. I wanted to get on a bus and go and see it up close, but we didn't get time as we only had about 2 hours before we had to go back to the hotel because the coach was picking us up to take us back to the UK. Thanks for posting it.

  11. It's a darn cool place to visit. And I am glad to know from Goofball's information about it that we went at the right time since it is now newly refurbished.
The queue to get to the top ball was LONG, but the lower balls are all accessible by escalator and stairs. That's what we explored while we left the daddy in line waiting and waiting and waiting for our turn on the lift.
After touring we spent time outside on the green lawn, ate a picnic lunch and listened to the band playing in the square! It was a lot of fun. I actually recommend the destination if you are traveling in Brussels!

here is the link to the mixture. I have tested it. It´s Tarte au Chocolat. The best baking mixture for chocolate cake i ever ate. Maybe you test it yourself.

  20. Did you mean you have seen photos of the atomium before?

lol, you know when you are typing fast to comment of the pictures sometimes the message comes out the wrong way. But yes, that's what I meant, I saw the atomium in some other blog a while ago, kind of hard to forget something as unique as that.

You too have a nice weekend.
